Hello everyone!
I got my Quest 3 on Saturday and since then, I could compare it very well to the Quest 2. Unfortunately, the microphone on the Q3 seems to sound awful compared to the Quest 2. Is there any news if this will be addressed in a patch?
I am specifically talking about lots of breathing noise, as well as a general lack of audio fidelity in recordings using the internal microphone. It almost sounds like a low bitrate and like lots of compression. I tested the mic using the build in screen recording, via link cable and air link.

I've received word from our engineers, right now the plan is to focus on when exactly the issue started. If this started after you updated to v60, we're going to ask you to make a post
here with the following information.
Please provide the following:
- What device are you using?
- Are you using the PTC build?
- How consistent is this happening?
- What Software Version is your Meta Quest Mobile App?
- What Software Version is your Meta Quest Headset?
- Are you mostly seeing this with Link, Air Link and Standalone?
- Does it only happen in specific apps and if so, which apps?
- Are you using any accessories with your Quest 3 that might cover parts of the headset like custom straps or anything that might cover the microphones?
- Please share recordings of the mic quality, if possible!
If this has been going on long before v60, please contact your retailer for warranty purposes. You are also able to reach out to Meta Quest Support by sending a Private Message or Submitting a Ticket. We appreciate your patience while the team looks into this!

I agree. Several friends and I who got Quest 3 headsets today all went on VRChat and found that the microphones on the Quest 3 is noticeably worse than the Quest 2. I’ve always praised the Quest 2 for its excellent microphone, so I’m super disappointed with this aspect of the Quest 3. We tested stand alone as well as Airlink and Virtual Desktop on the Rift and Steam versions and it’s always the same low fidelity sound on the Quest 3. Hopefully Meta can fix this with a software update cause right now I’m recommending people not buy the Quest 3 for VRChat

Agreed to the above!
Would suggest using adaptive audio profile curves for accommodating most common vocal ranges.
Main bit of feedback from many other interactions over a 6hr+ session that the high end range was quite tinny in contrast to the richness of the Quest 2 microphone.

Howdy there, @MrSheppard! The cavalry has arrived, and we'll be happy to offer you some suggestions for you to consider since we know that having issues with the microphone can be affecting your VR experience. Please tell us what kind of troubleshooting you performed so that we won't ask you to repeat them again.
- Make sure the microphone is clean and not obstructed (the microphone is 2 pinholes located a few inches apart one on either side of the nose)
- Test with multiple games/apps
- If happening only in one game/app, check the game/app permission to make sure microphone is enabled
- Reset Microphone
- Settings > System > Sound > Toggle Microphone
- Reboot the headset
- Factory reset
Please let us know it goes so we can determine if any additional steps are required!

I'm not the original poster, but I'll chime in. This was yesterday morning, four of us in different parts of the world. We all unboxed our brand new Quest 3 headsets and connected them to our PCs either through airlink, Virtual Desktop, or cabled Quest Link and got on VRChat. We met up and the first thing we noticed was the bad microphone quality on each of us. We are all friends who hang out with each other on there daily, so we know what we normally sound like on our previous Quest 2 headsets. This was a noticeable downgrade in quality of the voices we heard from each other. We chatted for a while and marveled at the upgraded graphics quality, but we kept going back to how bad we all sounded. It's not a problem with the speakers, we had a Quest 2 friend with us as well and he sounded normal. Actually better than normal because the speakers are better sounding than the Quest 2. So it's definitely a problem with the sound quality on the microphone. We then tested all the other methods of connectivity, we switched around to different methods of connecting to the PC, and we also tried using the Quest native VRChat app, and they all sounded the same poor quality, while the Quest 2 users sounded excellent. We also went into Horizon Worlds and found that the audio quality was bad in there as well. Keep in mind these are brand new our of the box headsets, and multiple of them. I'm hoping this is just a software problem and not a hardware one because this is a deal breaker for a lot of heavy social VR users. Please let me know if we can do any further testing to help get this resolved. Thank you for looking into this.

Hey there, @JosephLucas502! Thank you for drawing our attention to this. Please let us know if you are experiencing the same issue. either using it in standalone mode or only while connected to the PC, so we can get a clearer image of what we're up against. If this occurs only when connecting to a PC, consider repairing the app , which will check the integrity of the current Oculus Home installation and add or upgrade any missing files from our database we'll leave the steps below.
To Run a repair:
- Download and run the Oculus Installation Software (meta.com/quest/setup/)
- You will see a screen which says "Already Installed".
- Click the "Repair" option, and confirm again on the next screen.
Please let us know how it goes so we can determine if any additional steps are required!

Hi Meta, I too can confirm it's a mic issue with the quest 3. Last night in a multiplayer game, all the people who had the quest 3 sounded worse than normal. They sounded tinny and low quality. All the people still using quest 2 sounded fine - rich & full like normal.

And to further clarify, the issue was noticeable to both quest 2 & quest 3 users. They all could hear the bad audio quality of the 3 vs the quest 2. And also, all of us were on standalone - no pc users.

The microphone or the codec is bad. The audio is tinny sounding and has a tendency to cut in an out, the gain will randomly change lower for a couple words and then go back to normal. This can be heard in game and in any recordings you make with the mic. I was playing GRAB and Pop One last night and it could be heard in both. As I mentioned, you can hear it in any recordings that're made with the mic enabled.
